One day my little Acer Aspire ZG5 decided it wasn’t going to start anymore. When I pressed the power button it would go through the motions of starting, but about 30 seconds to a minute it would turn off. I tried using safe mode, but the little guy just wouldn’t stay on; also, the fan inside starting making a lot of noise, like it was spinning at a high rate of speed. Obviously some settings were changed and since this started as soon as I pressed the power button, I figured it must have something to do with the bios.

Here is how I fixed it:

Tools needed: any small usb drive and another computer connected to the internet to download the bios.

I started at this site: http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_one_150.html

I actually couldn’t get the bios to download because of FireFox or my script blocker, so I selected the link FTP site at the bottom of the page.

I then selected aspire_one_150 then bios and then v.3309.zip

I downloaded the file and extracted it to my little usb drive.

The extracted zip file made a folder called 3309. I opened this folder and found a few files in there, but I was only interested in two: FLASHIT.EXE and 3309.fd The first thing I did was rename the 3309.fd file to ZG5IA32.fd

Then I moved both files to the main directory of the little usb drive, since they were in the 3309 folder, I wanted them in the parent directory, to make it easier for the computer to read.

I then removed the usb drive and put it in the usb port on the left side of the Acer little netbook. I then held down the fn key and the Esc key at the same time and pressed the power button. You must continue to hold the fn and Esc key down but release the power button until you see the power button flash, then release the other 2 keys.

The screen will remain black for a while due to the bios being updated. Mine was dark for about 4 minutes, then bam, little guy loaded like a dream and everything was back to normal.

May your computer live a long and prosperous life,

John

First off, this took me over 6 hours to hunt down the fix for this. It takes less than ten minutes to fix and is quite simple, although it looks complex. The solution is toward the bottom, but I want to give a little background as to what happen.

I use Microsoft Essentials as my virus protection and it found one connected to ipsec.sys which was in my system32\drivers folder. Essentials took care of the virus but deleted the driver and that shut down my internet connection.

I use Firefox, however when I tried Internet Explorer it diagnosed that I had a winsock issue. So that is how my search started.

I tried:

1. Doing the diagnostic and resetting the winsock and restarting computer, NOPE
2. Start, run, then typed netsh winsock rest – NOPE
3. Copied the Fix It from Microsoft and ran it from a thumb drive – NOPE
4. Most ipconfig /flushdns and similar command did nothing – NOPE
5. LSPFIX.exe didn’t even show up on my screen when running – NOPE
6. System Restore, I have several dates, but not a single one would restore – NOPE
7. Restarting the DHCP, wouldn’t start – NOPE
8. Renaming the AFD file – NOPE
9. Copying a good copy of ipsec.sys and placing it in my system32\drivers folder – NOPE

I kept seeing something that just seemed too complicated and kind of scary and so I would dismiss it, but in-the-end, it is what I ended up doing and it was surprisingly simple. Not only did the solution below fix the problem, but I also was having problems with after a while my internet would stop working. Usually around 3am or so, anyway, I just had to restart and everything would work but it was pain. It was like links no longer worked and even google wouldn’t load. However the solution below even fixed that. So, if you found this webpage looking for that fix, this will probably do it.

Solution:

DO NOT DISMISS THIS AS COMPLICATED BECAUSE IT IS VERY EASY, JUST LOOKS HARD.

I will try and add some easier explanations as you go.

This solution is found throughout the web and came from microsoft.

==============================

Step #1
Full uninstall of TCP/IP … no bullbleep.
———————————————————————-
These steps are copied from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325356
11. Locate the Nettcpip.inf file in %winroot%\inf, and then open the file in Notepad.
(%winroot% – just means your windows directory, so just right click your start button and bring up your Explore)
(You are looking for the folder named inf in the widows directory)
12. Locate the [MS_TCPIP.PrimaryInstall] section.
13. Edit the Characteristics = 0xa0 entry and replace 0xa0 with 0×80.
(0xa0 = Zero, the letter X, the letter A, and Zero 0×80 = Zero, X, Eight, Zero)
14. Save the file, and then exit Notepad.
15. In Control Panel, double-click Network Connections, right-click Local Area Connection, and then select Properties.
16. On the General tab, click Install, select Protocol, and then click Add.
17. In the Select Network Protocols window, click Have Disk.
18. In the Copy manufacturer’s files from: text box, type c:\windows\inf and then click OK.
19. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click OK.
Note This step will return you to the Local Area Connection Properties screen, but now the Uninstall button is available.
20. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click Uninstall, and then click Yes.
RESTART

(This is just info and there is nothing to do)
succesfull uninstallation of TCP/IP will remove numerous keys from the registry including
HKLM/system/CurrentControlSet/services/tcpip
HKLM/system/CurrentControlSet/services/dhcp
HKLM/system/CurrentControlSet/services/dnscache
HKLM/system/CurrentControlSet/services/ipsec
HKLM/system/CurrentControlSet/services/policyagent
HKLM/system/CurrentControlSet/services/atmarpc
HKLM/system/CurrentControlSet/services/nla
These represent various interconnected and interdependant services.

(I did not do this part)
For good measure you should delete the following keys before reinstalling TCP/IP in step #2
HKLM/system/CurrentControlSet/services/winsock
HKLM/system/CurrentControlSet/services/winsock2

(Okay, now after restart you need to reinstall TCP/IP, very simple)
Step #2
Reinstall of TCP/IP
———————————————————————-
Following the above substep #13, replace the 0×80 back to 0xa0, this will eliminate the related “unsigned driver” error that was encountered during the uninstallation phase.

Return to “local area connection”> properties > general tab > install > Protocol > TCP/IP

(I didn’t receive the error so I didn’t have to do the following, I was done with the reinstall at this point)
You may receive an “Extended Error” failure upon trying to reinstall the TCP/IP, this is related to the installer sub-system conflicting with the security database status.

to check the integrity of the security database
esentutl /g c:\windows\security\Database\secedit.sdb

There may be a message saying database is out of date
first try the recovery option
esentutl /r c:\windows\security\Database\secedit.sdb

this did not work for me, I needed the repair option
esentutl /p c:\windows\security\Database\secedit.sdb

rerun the /g option to ensure that integrity is good and database is up to date.

Now return to the “local area network setup”
choose install > protocol > tcp/ip and try again

reboot.

==============================

It has been days since I did this and everything works perfect now. So if you have been searching for hours like I did, this is a very easy solution.

Have a wonderful day,

John David

This is for you XP users who don’t have the ability to hit ctrl alt delete and bring up the Task Manager and simply right click on the ping.exe and suspend it.

This simple fix is what I did and it has been effective for days now.

Problem:

My computer kept starting ping.exe and it would use up to 100% of my cpu usage or very close to it. If I end the process, it would come back in a few minutes.

My Solution:

First let my say, after I did this my computer ask me if I was sure because Windows will not work properly or the version was not going to work, or something like that, but I did it anyway and I haven’t had any side effects.

1. Click on Start then Search

2. Select All Files and Folders

3. Under All or part of the file name type *ping.exe*

The little * symbols mean it will search any file with any characters before ping.exe and after ping.exe. Anyway, you will probably get a long list.

What you are looking for is the ping.exe in the system32 folder. I had to delete ping.exe, ping6.exe, and some prestart ping. If you have the same files in a 386 folder, do not delete those. That is a backup copy of your Windows Operating System. So, if for some reason you ever need the ping.exe file you can always copy it from that folder.

4. So, all I did was delete my ping files from the system32 folder and everything is back to normal, finally!

Have a wonderful day,

JD

P.S. It has been a couple of weeks since I did this with no problems. However, a few days ago I ended up copying my ping.exe from my 386 folder and pasting it in my system32 folder and I still haven’t had any problems with ping.exe. I should add though I had a separate issue and removed TCP/IP protocall and reinstalled it, which fixed that other issue, so I am not 100% sure my pasting ping.exe back into the system32 folder is working by itself or because I reinstalled TCP/IP. If you like to see how to reinstall TCP/IP, here is my solution:

Somehow, even though, I was running AVG Free virus protection, this virus/malware (AV Security 2012) took over my computer. It wouldn’t let me bring up the control panel or almost anything.

It took me less than 5 minutes to disable it, however a couple of hours to remove it. I use Windows XP, but if you use another operating system like Vista or 7, just read through it and if you are actively searching for a cure, then you will probably be able to follow along even if you use something different than XP.

This is how I got rid of it or at least disabled it long enough to remove it.

I was able to restart the computer and during the start up I hit the F8 key so I could enter safe mode.

1. Once in safe mode I right clicked on the desktop AV Security 2012 icon and selected properties, which told me where it was pointing.

2. I then brought up explorer via right clicking on the START button on the widows task bar and selecting explore. You can also do this via My Computer or however you like. Anyway, I went to the .exe file that the AV Security 2012 desktop icon was pointing to and renamed it, well I just added the word sucks to the name.

3. I then, because I use Fire Fox, brought up the window and cleared my cookies.

4. Then in the task bar I clicked on start, then run and typed msconfig. Then selected the Startup tab and unchecked AV Security 2012. Clicked OK and restarted my computer.

5. Although, the Malware program was still on my computer, it was not being activated. I then downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials and installed it. I ran a quick scan, which took over an hour for me and I uninstalled AVG Free virus protection at the same time. The Essentials discovered the AV Security virus and removed it. However, it left the desktop icon and the folder with the same name, which I just deleted, since the files where already removed.

6. I restarted and everything works perfectly again.

Best of luck…

Anyway, eventually I will start digging up this information and see if it still viable and start giving insight to a particular game. Now, I realize there is always a lot of information about a particular game, but how many places have actual records of bringing in over $1000 in real cash for playing, say Everquest 2. So, somewhere buried in one of my computers is all this data and eventually I will get to producing this information, that is just so hard to find out there on the net.

Your email address will never be sold or given out to any third parties. I personally have battled junk mail and spam for many, many years and abhored companies that violate my trust in this fashion.

Adsense
As required by Adsense I must inform you that third parties may be placing and reading cookies on your browser or using web beacons to collect information. Meaning the advertisers want to know what you are doing and where you are going and all that jazz. So, you say, “Get those damn cookies away from me!” I realize many are on a diet and there are a few things you can do to insure you are offered no cookies.

No Cookies For You!
Let’s start with Internet Explorer (I.E.), the grand poobah of browsers, first you want to open your browser… um right… you are reading this so your browser is open. Okay, go to tools, should be in the upper right hand corner.

Then select Internet Options, it should have opened in the General tab, if not, then just select the general tab.

Under Browsing History you select Delete and a menu will come up with what you want to delete and Cookies is an option.

You can also, back in the General tab select Delete browsing history on exit and every time you close all your IE pages, the cookies will be removed.

For all the Firefox peeps, like myself, you also click on the Tools option at the top of your browser. Then select Options.

Next select the Privacy tab and viola your History comes up with some pretty cool options about the cookies if you select use custom settings for history.

So there you have it, cookie are not to cookie, the choice is yours.

Have a wonderful day,

Computers have been in my blood for decades now, every since my mom brought home a 8 Meg Hard Drive MEGA computer she purchased as part of her company “D&J Refund Reporter” which cost around $16,000 in 1983, of course that was the total price of the computer not just the hard drive. I might add the hard drive was bigger than most desktops now-a-days. I started writing computer programs in Basic and to this day, I still remember much of the code. I am the relative you call when you have computer related problems or are looking for that new gaget or how to get the damn thing to work! I am sure every family has one or two. To this day, I am still helping people, whether it is a local business being attacked by a virus or just my cousin calling up with the latest problem he is having. I have always been associated with repairing, script writing, virus removal, and just all around computer guy. I eventually hope to have many articles on computer games, computer issues, computer hardware/software, and just a multitude of subjects that might end up branching out into a huge tree. However, for now, I will begin planting the roots and we shall see where it takes us.

I have personally built a few computers but it sure would have been nice to have a guide like this one. If you are planning to build a computer do yourself a favor and get a manual, something you can follow step by step. If not this one, then one like it. It will save you a lot of aggravation. This ebook is only $37.97 and well worth it.
