Grr! I went to sleep fine and woke okay, but was tired. My eyes were really tired and I should have ran around the apt or took a walk or something, but instead I said, I will lay down for just a moment and bam! 2 hours later….

Thus ends day 60 of the Polyphasic Sleep Project and overall it was a nice day. I demonstrated today how with a solid core nap you can skip sessions if you have to. I really need to get those 3am and 7am sessions down. If I can make it through those time slots with only 10 minutes each, I am pretty sure I can make it through the day with 1 hour of sleep.
Sleep Well,
JD
Wow, you’ve been doing pretty well those past days, keeping down those sleep hours. How do you feel after waking up from your 10-min naps compared to the 20-min ones? you seem to have more vivid dreams, but do you feel just as well rested?
Claudie recently posted..Polyphasic- Weeks 9 & 10 – Part I- the test
The waking part from a 10 min nap is incredibly easy compared to any other naps I have had. The only thing I have not be able to do yet, is make it through a core time on 10 minutes only, but all my nap sessions are extremely easy compared to my 18 or 20 minute naps. I rarely ever even need my back up alarms on the 10 min naps. It is like I am so confident in them. Of course I will know more once I switch over to a 3 hour core and four 10 minute naps. Right now, I am making it on a 1 hour core, but that 1 hour core is extremely difficult. The naps are no problem, but the core is crazy hard. I just don’t want to get up and if it wasn’t for this damn goal I have I wouldn’t, lol…
So, I highly recommend the 10 minute nap over all other naps. You just need to find the right amount of core hours.
Oh, you remember, how we discussed the hassle of sleeping so many naps and stuff. Such as five or six 20 minute naps, well, ever since I switched to 10 minute naps, I don’t feel like they are a hassle at all. I mean, what is 10 minutes after all, practically nothing. Okay, I think I am done making my pitch for 10 minute naps, now it is time for you to try them and then comment about the experience so we can all know if this is actually viable or if I am just some sort of mutant…

Yes, I remember And this 10-min thing does indeed sound pretty good. I too often waste at least another 5-15min after my nap trying to wake up my brain. Polyphasic sounds perfect to reduce sleeping time, but someone must account for all those minutes lost before and after napping The 2-hours on the Ubberman would probably end up being at least 3…
I need to catch up with your blog now to see how you are keeping up with those, but I might really switch to 10-min naps after the next 2-weeks. (My exam session started, and I don’t want to experiment too much right now.)
By the way: do you have any idea how taking a 10 rather than 20-min nap might affect the REM cycle?
Claudie recently posted..Polyphasic sleep- Caloric expenditure and workouts Cont W 9 & 10
As for the REM cycle, it has changed now that I have been doing the 10 minute or even less naps now. At first I was waking up in the middle of the dream and they always seemed epic. Seriously, like a life time had past and I always felt I must have slept for days to have that kind of dream. It was strange waking in this state, this altered reality that seemed so very real. However, as time moved on the dreams began to not be as epic and sometimes fade right after waking. Now, it is rare that I wake in the middle of one and only really happens if I sleep less than 5 minutes. Apparently our minds just adapt.I am probably in REM sleep for only 5 or so minutes now. Once you start you will probably say, why didn’t I do these earlier. It is just so easy to sleep 10 min or less now. If I could only get the core stabilized I will be golden.
Good luck on your exams
